A threatening Halloween display was erected in the town of Ste. Genevieve. The display included five nearly life-sized figures hanging from a noose in a person’s yard with the word “ward” and different numbers next to it written on four of the figures legs. A sign above the figures read “Politics All Tricks No Treats.”
“I am incredibly shocked and concerned by the inappropriate display that was set up to intimidate and threaten municipal officials in the RM of Taché,” said MLA Lagassé. “These hateful representations are unacceptable and have no place in our community.”
Elected officials are chosen democratically to serve and represent their constituents, and they deserve to fulfill their duties safely and without fear. While freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it should never be used to threaten, intimidate, or incite violence against anyone. A healthy democracy depends on mutual respect and on ensuring that everyone can participate in public debate in an environment free from threats and intimidation.
“I stand with the Taché municipal officials who were targeted by this act, and remain committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all.”
